  • What should I do if I think I have a Mental Illness?

    If you have any signs or symptoms of a mental illness or think you may have one, consult your primary care doctor or a mental health professional so they can evaluate you and provide or refer you to appropriate resources. Most mental illnesses do not improve on their own and, without treatment, can worsen over time, and seeking help early has been shown to improve prognosis.

    Sometimes it seems obvious that someone we know or close to us is going through a complicated situation, but it is not easy to know if it is something temporary or something more serious and that may involve a mental health problem.

    Depending on the mental illness, if it is controlled and with adequate treatment, these people can integrate into society completely normally and stop suffering from that diagnosis, as in the case of an adjustment disorder.

  • When should we consider that we are facing a serious mental illness?

    The term Severe Mental Disorder (SMI) refers to long-term psychiatric disorders that entail a variable degree of disability and social dysfunction.

  • If a person has a serious mental disorder, will they need to take medication? How long?

    In general, people with serious mental illness need medication or pharmacological treatment, however, it is not the only existing treatment, since it is usually combined with different types of treatments, including psychological treatment.

  • What is a psychotic break? Is a psychotic break the same as schizophrenia?

    Psychosis refers to symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and language, and strange and inappropriate motor behavior (including catatonia) that indicate temporary loss of contact with reality.
